Please Stop Belo Monte Dam and Help Indigenous People

Dear friends,

This is one of those times when we are all called upon to take action. I ask for your help in protecting 400,000 acres of Brazilian forests and the Kayapo and Jurana cultures in the Xingu Basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Please help us continue to stop the Belo Monte Dam project! The potential devastation of these people and the lands they live on – the plants, animals, rivers – is not merely a Brazilian issue. Our very survival as a humane species is at stake here.

Our friends at AmazonWatch , have been covering this issue for some time and they've reported that many violent interactions have already occurred between the indigenous people and local police, supported by gunmen hired by ranchers. Many acres of pristine forest have been ravaged.

Dilma Rousseff, the new president of Brazil has given approval to build this hydroelectric plant. To make this possible, two huge canals 500 meters wide by 75 km long will be excavated, unearthing more land than was removed to build the Panama Canal and will devastate over 400,000 acres of land. More than 40,000 indigenous people will be dislocated. Massive environmental destruction, deforestation, and the disappearance of many plant and animal species is imminent – if this project moves forward.

Please join me in calling for Mr. Marcio Meira, the President of the Brazilian government's National Indigenous Foundation to keep commitments previously made to the Kayapo and Juruna, promises that they and the land and water will be protected. Demand that his agency act immediately to stem further violence and expel illegal settlers from the ancestral territories of these ancient and proud peoples.

The Kayapo and Jurana have long considered themselves to be "custodians of the land." Although they want to avoid violent confrontation, they have vowed to protect the forests. They need your help – our help.

We all must work to save the forests and the indigenous people who live in them and care for them in such a precious and unique way. Please act right now! Follow the directions at this link http://amazonwatch.org/take-action/chief-raoni-and-the-kayapo-under-attack and sign the petitions to show your support for creating a sustainable and just world, one where all sentient beings can thrive.

What a great way to celebrate the second month of this Year of the Prophecies!

Many thanks
John
